Can you really build muscle without weights?

The short answer is, yes! Absolutely! Not only can you build muscle without weights but you can build a serious amount of butt kicking strength without weights as well. Hard to believe? Than read on!

All the new exercise machines, gadgets and "revolutionary" weight training systms have buried some of the old tried and true muscle building methods, two of the best being kettlebell workouts and bodyweight training.

Back before weights men go to be men by training with their own bodyweight.

In fact, I'd say those men were stronger than the men of today.

Don't believe me? See all those guys on the lat pulldown machine in your gym? Grab one of them sometime and see how they do with a bodyweight exercise, the pull up.

The lat pulldown machine is much easier than the bodyweight pull up.

I've always recommended the big weight training exercises such as deadlifts, squats and dips because they work more muscles at a time, allowing you to build serious strength and serious muscle without wasting time on pansy, ineffective "isolation" exercises.

The same is true with bodyweight exercises. When I say you can build muscle without weights, I'm not talking about doing jumping jacks.

I'm talking about serious exercises like pull ups, handstand presses, push ups, dips and squats.

And all these exercises have almost an endless variety of ways to do them to make the exercise even harder for you as you get stronger.

Let's take a look at just some of the push up variations you can do:

  • Regular Push Ups
  • Wall Push ups
  • Incline Push ups
  • Kneeling Push ups
  • Half Push Ups
  • Full Push ups
  • Close Hands Push ups
  • Uneven Push ups (one hand on a ball, block or kettlebell
  • 1/2 One-arm Push ups
  • Lever Push ups
  • One-arm Push ups

Yes, you can build your chest, triceps and shoulders with push ups!

The core bodyweight exercises you'll want to use include:

  • Push ups
  • Pull ups
  • Squats
  • Leg Raises
  • Handstand Push ups
  • Bridges
  • Dips

Are your shoulders strong enough for handstand push ups? Think they're easier than seated military presses? Hardly.
