When I started lifting weights I weighed a whopping 141 pounds at 6 feet tall. So believe me when I say I know how you feel about wanting to jump in with some super duper advanced muscle building routine so you can quickly add muscle mass to your body. But that's not they way to go. You won't build much muscle on those advanced routines. You'll most likely make no (or very little) progress, end up over trained, get frustrated and quit, convincing yourself that weight training only works for the genetic freaks that take anabolic steroids. Weight training works. Period. But you need to start somewhere. And by the way, if you've been lifting for awhile but are struggling to gain muscle, you need these tips on how to gain muscle mass. If more lifters went back to the basics and got away from these crazy routines, they'd build a lot more muscle mass. 1. Correct Exercise Technique Make sure you learn how to do the exercises correctly. This isn't just to prevent injury but to help you get quicker muscle building results. Bench pressing properly will add a lot more muscle to your body than they way a lot of trainees do it, which is to drop the weight on their chest, bounce it upwards, push off with their feet and lift their hips a foot off the bench. Besides being very dangerous, you're not working your chest muscles nearly as much as if you lower the weight you use and use correct form. 2. Use The Right Mass Building Exercises You don't need a gazillion different exercises and you don't need all those machine-based isolation exercises. Stick to the basics for serious mass building. Of course, most people don't because the best exercises are also the most difficult and people like to avoid them. I'm talking about mass builders like: - Barbell Squat
- Deadlift
- Lunge
- Stiff Legged Deadlift
- Pull Ups
- Miltary Press
- Dumbbell Upright Row
- Barbell Curl
- Dips
- Decline Bench Press
- Close Grip Bench Press
3. Intensity Sure, there are periods of time where you will back off a bit in order to recover and recharge but nothing gets mass building results more than balls to the wall intensity. You need to take your work sets to a point where you can't complete another rep in good form. 4. Sets Most people do way too many sets and end up over trained without any results. While a lot of other factors come into play (how many times you work a body part per week, your intensity level, etc.) as a general rule you should keep your sets in the 3 to 6 range for each body part. 5. Rep Range When gaining muscle mass is your goal, start out keeping your reps in the 8 to 12 range. Research has shown this to be the most productive rep range for the most people. As you get more advanced, you may find that higher or lower rep ranges may be better for you for specific body parts but you can't go wrong with the 8 to 12 reps per set approach.
